This is what I found out. The rebels need the wizard in order to open the portal to Igsh. Through it, Imperial troops will arrive, do away with our army, and seize the capital. Dreadful, isn't it? The rebellion and the seizure of Oreshek was all for that purpose and funded by the Empire. Oh, if only I had known that before...
