Introduction
Here's what I know... There were two Elves here, and they too were victims of the darkness. Or maybe they created it...
Either way, they're dead now. My branches were the weapon that killed them. Pierced through their soft flesh with ease, and their souls returned to the Astral.
That's what you need to tell the Elves - a wooden stake is the best weapon against the spawns of darkness! If anyone is in any doubt, they can test it out themselves. You can gather branches from the trees on your way back and give them to the Elves to test. Farewell, gentle one...

What Silvio said about the Elves and the darkness has been confirmed by the folks at Summer Manor. The poor souls were spotted there too. They even have a name for them over there - vampires, after their first victim, Vamp de Desirae.
